cause mild overtreatment, i.e., a reduction in dietary Phe allowances in excess of metabolic tolerance. This is not critical with Phe concentrations at or above the upper limit of normal. Still, neurological outcome has also been demonstrated to be adversely affected by Phe deficiency (14 ). In view of an overestimation by up to 60 mmol/L in the low concentration range and a target range of 40–250 mmol/L in fresh samples, it would appear prudent to aim at Phe concentrations .100 mmol/L for samples measured after delayed preparation from whole blood. In conclusion, the clinical practice of delayed measurement of Phe and Tyr in whole-blood samples mailed to the specialized laboratory leads to slightly increased readings. This is clinically safe, as long as Phe concentrations are kept above 100 mmol/L to prevent Phe deficiency.

Mean Serum Concentration of Vitamin D-binding Protein (Gc Globulin) Is Related to the Gc Phenotype in Women | Clinical Chemistry
Gc is the major carrier protein of vitamin D and its metabolites in the circulation and is important for preservation of the vitamin (4)(5). Gc also transports components such as fatty acids and endotoxin (6)(7), and it is an important player in the actin scavenging system (8)(9). Gc binds actin released from cells upon injury, and the Gc-actin complexes are rapidly cleared from the circulation...
متن کاملGc-globulin (vitamin D-binding protein) enhances the neutrophil chemotactic activity of C5a and C5a des Arg.
Several serum proteins have been shown to be important in modulating leukocyte chemotaxis and inflammation. We investigated the possibility that the multifunctional serum protein Gc-globulin (vitamin D-binding protein) may also enhance the neutrophil chemotactic activity of complement-derived peptides. Purified Gc-globulin by itself did not induce chemotaxis of human neutrophils. However, as li...
متن کاملGc-globulin: roles in response to injury.
BACKGROUND Gc-globulin (vitamin D-binding protein) appears to have important functions in addition to its role as a carrier of vitamin D. APPROACH We reviewed recent studies focusing on the pathophysiologic functions and clinical significance of Gc-globulin. RESULTS Serum concentrations of Gc-globulin, as determined by immunoassay techniques, are decreased in severe injury. The extent of th...
متن کاملPossible Association between Dysfunction of Vitamin D Binding Protein (GC Globulin) and Migraine Attacks
To identify the genetic causality of migraine and acute, severe melalgia, we performed a linkage analysis and exome sequencing in a family with four affected individuals. We identified a variant (R21L) in exon 2 of the GC globulin gene, which is involved in the transportation of vitamin D metabolites and acts as a chemotaxic factor; this variant was co-segregated within the family. To investiga...
متن کاملAssociation of genetic variants of vit D binding protein (DBP/GC) and of the enzyme catalyzing its 25-hydroxylation (DCYP2R1) and serum vit D in postmenopausal women.
OBJECTIVE To determine if GC (group-specific component globulin) and CYP2R1 genetic variants have an association with serum 25-OHD3 levels, BMD or bone turnover markers in a population of Chinese postmenopausal women. DESIGN We randomly selected 1494 postmenopausal women of the Han ethnic group from seven communities in Beijing. BMD was determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry; serum bo...
